What are the steps to apply for an insurance in Ohio?

Step 1: Complete a pre-licensing course that has been approved by the Department of Insurance.

Step 2: Schedule your exam with your state’s testing provider, PSI Exams. The fastest way to schedule your exam is to do so online at www.psiexams.com. You can also schedule your exam over the phone at (800) 733-9267. Exam fees must be paid at the time of reservation. To change of cancel your testing appointment, you must contact PSI Exams at least 48 hours in advance or forfeit the examination fee.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When you register for ExamFX pre-licensing courses, schedule your license exam, and/or apply for your license it is important to use the same name that appears on the identification forms you plan to present at the time of your testing appointment. You must also provide your pre-licensing certificate of completion. You will not be able to take your exam if these requirements are not met.

Step 3: Take and pass your state licensing exam. On the day of your appointment you must bring with you two valid forms of government issued identification (driver’s license, passport, military I.D., etc.), one of which must contain your name and photograph. You must also provide your pre-licensing certificate of completion. You will not be able to take your exam if these requirements are not met. At the end of your exam, you will receive a printed score report marked “pass” or “fail.”

Step 4: Complete an electronic criminal background check using National WebCheck. You may set an appointment online. More information about fingerprinting and background information visit the Background Check page on the Ohio Department of Insurance’s website.

Step 5: Apply for your license with NIPR online.

Step 6: Maintain your license by being aware of your continuing education requirements. Most insurance licenses must be maintained by completing a certain number of credit hours of continuing education each licensing period. How do I study for my Insurance License in Ohio?

  1. Complete all “Study by Topic” reading chapters and Study by Topic quizzes. Study by Topic quizzes must be passed with a score of 70% or better.
  2. After completing the Study by Topic reading and quizzes, you must complete and pass Simulate Your Exam with a score of 70% or better.
  3. Upon completion of Simulate Your Exam, you will receive and must sign, date and email the Affidavit form immediately to certification.services@examfx.com. A certificate of completion will not be issued until all of the requirements above have been successfully completed.

    How do I apply for a non-resident Insurance License in Ohio?

    • Applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years old or older as determined from the applicant’s date of birth.
    • Applicant must not have any serious RIRS or 1033 actions. Please contact the state if applicable.
    • Applicant must not hold an active resident license in Ohio.

    Major Line agent applicants:

    • Must have active license in resident state for the same line(s) of authority (LOA).
    • Applicants for the variable line of authority (LOA) must supply FINRA CRD number on application.
    • Provide required supporting documents, if necessary.

     

    How do I renew my Insurance License in Ohio?

    All Ohio insurance licenses are now required to be renewed. While a $25 renewal fee is required to be paid by all limited line and non-resident agents, the renewal fee is waived for all resident agents with a continuing education requirement.     What do I do if my license has expired in Ohio?

     A person may request to return to active status by:

    • Filing a reactivation request with the superintendent;
    • Submitting proof of approved continuing education credits based on the license type being reactivated (or proof of completed pre-licensing education course for each line of authority) completed within the preceding six (6) months; and
    • Paying any required fees.

     

    What do I do for continuing education to keep my license in Ohio?

     Continuing Education

    • Since 2010, all Ohio insurance agents and business entities who hold a major line, limited line and/or title insurance license are required to renew their license(s) every two years.
    • Resident agents with a continuing education requirement must obtain all required credits prior to their license expiration date. An agent will not be eligible to renew their insurance license(s) until they have satisfied their continuing education requirement.
