Q: What are the Licensing Steps in Michigan?
Step 1: Complete a pre-licensing course that has been approved by the Department of Insurance. We recommend using ExamFX. Once you have completed your course, ExamFX will issue a certificate of completion which you may download and print from your online ExamFX account.
Step 2: Schedule your exam with your state’s testing provider, PSI Exams. The fastest way to schedule your exam is to do so online at PSI Exams. You can also schedule your exam over the phone at 855-579-4639. Your exam may be taken at a physical PSI examination center or via a remote online proctored exam. Note: Remote online proctored examinations require a desktop computer or laptop, (smartphones and tablets are not compatible with PSI’s technology requirements) a webcam, a microphone, and an Internet connection.

To change or cancel your testing appointment, you must contact PSI Exams at least 48 hours in advance or forfeit the examination fee.
Important: When you register for ExamFX pre-licensing courses, schedule your license exam, and/or apply for your license it is important to use the same name that appears on the identification forms you plan to present at the time of your testing appointment.
Step 3: Take and pass your state licensing exam. On the day of your appointment you must bring with you two valid forms of government issued identification (driver’s license, passport, military I.D., etc.) one of which must contain a photograph and a signature and your certificate of completion. You will not be able to take your exam if these requirements are not met.
Security measures are taken for all testing methods. Restrictions on what you may bring with you to the testing center, into the testing room, and what you may wear will be enforced. Your results will be given to you immediately following the exam. If you do not pass you will receive a diagnostic report indicating your strengths and weaknesses.

To request a Non-Resident Producer license in Michigan:
- File an Electronic Resident Licensing (ERL) application through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) website. The license application fee is $10.00 plus a $6.18 transaction fee. An application is valid for 180 days from entry into our database.
- Michigan will rely on verification of the applicant’s Resident license through the State Producer Licensing Database in lieu of an original Letter of Certification.
Q: How do I renew my health insurance license in Michigan?
Resident individual producer licenses are perpetual as long as the licensee is compliant with Continuing Education credit requirements as described on the Insurance Licensee Continuing Education FAQ web page. Resident business entity (agency) licenses are not required to renew as long as the license remains active and in good standing.
Non-Resident individual and business entity (agency) producer licenses are perpetual as long as the home state license remains active and in good standing.
Q: What do I do if my health insurance license has expired in Michigan?
A producer whose license is suspended or inactive due to lack of continuing education (CE) credits may be reinstated within one (1) year from the CE review date.
If the license has been suspended or inactive less than 90 days from the CE review date, the license will become active when the CE credits are reported to DIFS; a new application is not required.
A licensee can be considered for license reinstatement if the CE is completed and reported to DIFS and an Electronic Resident Licensing (ERL) application and fee are submitted through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) website and received by DIFS within 12 months from the CE review date.
The ERL application fee is $10.00 plus a $5.00 transaction fee.
The ERL application is valid for 180 days from entry into our database.
Q: What do I do for Continuing Education to keep my health insurance license in Michigan?
- Resident producers and solicitors must earn 24 credits of State-approved education credit every two years.
- Of the 24 credits, a minimum of 3 credits must be in ethics coursework.
- The other 21 credits may be in accident & health, life, property, casualty, etc.
- If a licensee completes more than 3 credits in ethics, the additional credits beyond the 3 required ethics credits will count toward the general 21 credits needed.
- A maximum of 12 CE credit hours may be eligible to be carried over to the next CE review period. A licensee must first be compliant for the current CE review period before carryover credit hours can be calculated.
- Nonresidents – Michigan is reciprocal with all other states. By meeting your home state CE requirements, you will automatically comply with Michigan’s requirements. You are not required to submit proof of CE compliance to our office.
