Q: What are the Licensing Steps in Vermont?

Step 2: Schedule your exam online with your state’s testing provider, Prometric. You may also schedule over the phone at (800) 868-6113. our exam may be taken at a physical Prometric examination center or via a remote online proctored exam. Exam fees must be paid at the time of reservation.

Step 3: Take and pass your state licensing exam. On the day of your appointment you must bring with you one valid form of government issued identification (driver’s license, passport, military I.D., etc.) which must contain a photograph and a signature. You will not be able to take your exam if these requirements are not met.
Security measures are taken for all testing methods. Restrictions on what you may bring with you to the testing center, into the testing room, and what you may wear will be enforced. At the end of your exam, you will receive a score report with an overall score and grade, including the numerical percentage of questions answered correctly and whether you passed or failed.
Step 4: Apply for your license with NIPR. You must wait 48 hours after passing your examination in order to successfully apply for your license.

In order to obtain a Vermont insurance license, a nonresident must hold a similar license in another state or province of Canada and must be deemed by the Commissioner to be competent, trustworthy, financially responsible, and of good personal and business reputation.
Nonresidents MUST apply for licensure ELECTRONICALLY effective September 1, 2012 using one of the electronic service providers listed below. An applicant may request a hardship exception to the submission of an electronic application.

Q: How do I renew my health insurance license in Vermont?
All licenses in Vermont expire on a common expiration date regardless of when they were issued. Vermont does not prorate fees. Producer licenses are biennial, effective from April 1 (or date of issuance) to March 31 of each odd-numbered year. All licenses must be renewed by the individual, and it is the licensee’s responsibility to see that the renewal license is in effect, even if a notice is not received.
**All applications received at the Insurance Department after March 1st, of the odd year will not be issued effective until April 1st, of the same odd year, unless a specific request is made.
**Paper renewals are only accepted if the electronic renewal option is not available for your license type listed above, or you have requested, and been granted a Hardship Exception to the electronic processing. At the bottom of this page you will find the NAIC Uniform Renewal/Continuation Application. Checks should be made payable to the VT Dept of Financial Regulation. All paper renewal applications must be in our office prior to March 31, 2019.

Q: What do I do if my health insurance license has expired in Vermont?
Your license will not be renewed if:
- You failed to request an extension and did not satisfy the CE requirement
- Your license will be suspended if you requested an extension and have not satisfied the CE requirement by the end of the extension.
- If your license is non-renewed for failure to complete your CE requirement, you must submit a new NAIC Uniform application
- You will also need to attach copies of your CE compliance certificates from the previous CE period.

CE Guidelines
Vermont licensed Producers are required to take 24 hours of CE, including 3 hours of ethics, every 2-year license term. Vermont’s license term is 2 years ending March 31, in odd numbered years.
Repeat Courses
A student cannot take a course more than once in a 2-year license term.
Approved Courses
Producers may take an approved course in any line of authority to obtain their Continuing Education credits, but it is recommended that they take courses pertaining to their license type.
Credits Carried Over
No carry over credits are allowed.
