Q: What are the Licensing Steps in Virginia?
Step 1 (optional): Complete an optional prelicensing course that helps prepare you to take and pass your licensing exam. We recommend using ExamFX.
Step 2: Obtain a Criminal History Record Report (CHRR). Contact the Virginia State Police at (804) 674-2131 or visit the Virginia State Police website. Further directions about completing the form may be found on the form.
Step 3: Schedule your exam with your state’s testing provider, Prometric, online by clicking here. You may also schedule over the phone at (866) 891-6396. Your exam may be scheduled at one of Prometric’s physical testing locations or via remote testing using Prometric’s ProProctor™ application. Exam fees must be paid at the time of reservation.

Step 4: Take and pass your state licensing exam. On the day of your appointment you must bring with you two valid forms of government issued identification (driver’s license, passport, military I.D., etc.) one of which must contain a photograph and a signature. You will not be able to take your exam if these requirements are not met.
At the end of the exam, the score will be shown on the screen and you will receive an emailed score report.
Security measures are taken for all testing methods. Restrictions on what you may bring with you to the testing center, into the testing room, and what you may wear will be enforced. Step 5: Apply for your license with Sircon. Attach the CHRR with all related documents to the application. Virginia requires the submission of fingerprints with applications for resident insurance licenses. Applicants must submit their application for an insurance license within 90 days of submitting their fingerprints to Fieldprint.

Candidates will create a user account on Fieldprint’s website and use Code “FPVABOICHRR” to ensure that the results from the fingerprint review are provided to the Bureau of Insurance. Candidates must bring appointment number and two forms of valid identification such as a driver’s license or passport.

Q: How do I apply for a nonresident health insurance license in Virginia?
Nonresidents must currently hold the same license they applied for in their home state. Florida and Pennsylvania agents are required to pass the Title exam in their home state and Virginia for licensure. You are not required to take Virginia’s pre-licensing study course prior to taking the Title exam.

Q: How do I renew my health insurance license in Virginia?
Producers must submit a nonrefundable $20 Continuance fee must be paid by both resident and non-resident agents before November 30 of the biennium year. Producers must also complete the proper CE courses by the last day of November in the biennium. The Bureau will send pre-termination notices out the first week of December in the biennium to notify those who are not compliant. Agents will have until December 31 to correct any CE deficiencies.

Q: What do I do if my health insurance license has expired in Virginia?
Reinstatements only apply to individual licenses. Individual licenses may be reinstated within twelve months from the renewal date due to non-renewal or failure to complete continuing education requirements. This does not apply to agents who failed to complete continuing education for the 2019-2020 biennium. In addition to the original renewal fee, a reinstatement fee that is double the renewal fee will be required. Residents must complete all CE requirements before submitting a reinstatement.

Q: What do I do for Continuing Education to keep my health insurance license in Virginia?
CE Guidelines
Virginia licensed Producers holding one license are required to take 16 hours of CE, including 3 hours of ethics, each biennium and is based upon licensees’ date of birth (month and year.)
Approved Courses
Producers must take CE courses for the license type that they hold. If more than one license is held, the producer must take at least 8 hours of CE credit per license held. CE credits awarded for Other General Insurance (OGI) topics will be used to meet any license-specific requirement but will not meet the Ethics requirement.
Credits Carried Over
Virginia allows excess ethics credits to be applied to cover other CE requirements in the current biennium. Any remaining credits will be carried forward into the next biennium and applied to either the ethics or other CE requirements.
